Abstract

Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and youth share a positive synergy, wherein NGOs offer a platform for young person to articulate ideas and concepts, engage socially, establish networks, and enhance their potential through voluntary experiences. Gerakan Mengajar Desa Kalimantan Timur exemplifies an NGO dedicated to empowering youth through volunteerism. The increase in membership has made the organization dynamic, challenging Gerakan Mengajar Desa Kaltim to establish effective communication processes that maintain active member involvement and achieve organizational goals. This study aims to describes the communication patterns within the Gerakan Mengajar Desa community in the context of achieving youth empowerment through volunteerism. Communication patterns are analyzed based on Joseph A. DeVito's communication pattern theory, which includes the chain, wheel, "Y," circle, and all-channel/star patterns. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study uses data collection through interviews and document analysis. Data analysis techniques include data collection, data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that stars/all-channel, chain, and wheel communication patterns are frequently used within the Gerakan Mengajar Desa Kalimantan Timur to create a unified understanding of operational activities. Nonetheless, the chain pattern is not effectively implemented due to to a lack of clear task and authority definitions within the organizational structure of the Tutor Inspiratif team. Conversely, the "Y" pattern and circle pattern are infrequently used and are not executed effectively. The research indicates that the youth empowerment process in Gerakan Mengajar Desa Kaltim based on Edi Suharto’s five empowerment approaches utilizes approaches of enabling, strengthening, supporting, and maintaining.
