https://jurnal.uts.ac.id/index.php/jetlli/article/view/6440

This study investigates the language styles and functions used in TikTok campaign videos during Indonesia's 2024 regional elections (Pilkada). Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study explores how local political candidates employed short-form video content to influence and engage voters, particularly younger demographics. The data, drawn from five prominent candidates’ TikTok accounts, were analyzed using Joos’ (1976) language style classification and Holmes’ (2013) language function framework. The findings reveal the predominance of casual and consultative language styles, which reflect candidates’ intentions to appear relatable and informative. Referential and expressive language functions were the most frequently used to convey political messages and create emotional connections. This study underscores the importance of language strategy in digital political discourse and offers insights into how social media platforms like TikTok are reshaping political communication.
Hasrul Sani

https://jurnal.uts.ac.id/index.php/jetlli/article/view/5822

This article aims to provide an ecocritical analysis, a growing focus within literary theory, to explore the connection between women and water. Ecocriticism examines the intricate relationship between humans and the natural world, offering a perspective that allows literary texts to be interpreted through ecological concerns. This approach is intended to deepen our multifaceted understanding of literature while encouraging critical reflection on ecological responsibilities, particularly related to women and water. The analysis reveals that water is deeply intertwined with cultural constructions of identity, especially femininity. As both a symbolic and physical force, water represents nurturing and destructive qualities that reflect the complex positions women hold within patriarchal and postcolonial contexts. It functions not only as a metaphor for female experience but also as a space of political conflict where bodies, histories, and ecosystems intersect.

Key words: women; water; ecocriticism; femininity; resistance; gender
Liska Novianti Paramitaswari

https://jurnal.uts.ac.id/index.php/jetlli/article/view/5793

Speaking anxiety is a common challenge faced by students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL), often hindering their ability to communicate effectively. This study investigates the nature of students’ speaking anxiety in EFL classrooms and the coping strategies they employ to manage it. The study was conducted in Sumbawa University of Technology and the samples of the study were taken from Informatics Department. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 23 informatics students, focusing on their experiences of anxiety during speaking tasks and the techniques they use to overcome it. The findings reveal that fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and worry about negative evaluation are primary sources of speaking anxiety. Students exhibit various physical and emotional symptoms such as trembling, sweating, and nervousness. To cope with these challenges, students adopt strategies including thorough preparation, positive self-talk, peer support, and relaxation techniques. However, some students still resort to avoidance behaviors that may limit their language development. The study highlights the critical role of teachers/ lecturers in creating a supportive, low-pressure classroom environment that encourages risk-taking and normalizes errors as part of the learning process. It also suggests that institutions should provide training for educators to address affective factors and offer counseling services for anxious learners. By understanding and addressing speaking anxiety, educators can better support students in achieving greater fluency and confidence in English communication.

Keywords: speaking anxiety; anxiety strategies; English as Foreign Language students.
Wirentake

https://jurnal.uts.ac.id/index.php/jetlli/article/view/5795

In fact, Indonesian students’ reading comprehension skill is still relatively low. Many teachers in Indonesia still use conventional method or technique in teaching reading. Popularized by Tony Buzan, mind map abandons the format of conventional note taking. Mind map is more compact than conventional notes, often taking up one side of paper. Mind map is also useful for summarizing information; consolidating information from different research sources; thinking through complex problems; and presenting information in a format that shows the overall structure of our subject. A good mind map shows the 'shape' of the subject, the relative importance of individual points, and the way in which facts relate to one another. Mind map as one of the reading techniques helps students to make their reading comprehension better.

Keywords: Using, Mind Map, Improve, Reading Comprehension
Suparman, Hasrul Sani, Melvyca Wai
