Abstract

This paper analyzes the attempt to smelt tastes of cultural products within the social classes in Indonesia through the recommendation feature of the Netflix platform. Netflix is a platform for showing award-winning television shows, films, animation, documentaries, and so on with high popularity in Indonesia. Through its popularity, Netflix can also influence people's consumption of shows through popular show recommendations. To analyze the fusion of class tastes carried out by Netflix, this paper uses a descriptive qualitative method by building an analysis using the phenomenon of changes in class relations in contemporary culture from Wright. In addition, the writing also analyzes using the logic of social class hierarchies by Pierre Bourdieu. The findings in this paper show that the show recommendation feature on Netflix is able to create a fusion of tastes between classes, namely the upper class and the middle class. Even though it cannot be fully proven through immigration from various social classes in society, Netflix by using its recommendation feature is able to construct tastes in Indonesian society.
